The Complete Guide to YouTube Channel Setup and Branding: Logo, Banner and Settings
Good videos matter, but so does a well-organised, clear channel. When a new viewer likes one of your videos and visits your channel, they decide within a few seconds whether to subscribe or not. In this article you will learn, step by step, how to set up a YouTube channel the right way: brand account, name and handle, logo and banner sizes, About section, links, channel keywords, default upload settings, verification, playlists and the channel trailer.
YouTube's menus change from time to time, so if you cannot find an option where it is described here, search for its name in the YouTube Help Center.
Step 1: Create the channel (with a brand account)
- Log in to youtube.com with your Google account.
- Click your profile picture in the top-right corner and select "Create a channel".
- If you want the channel to carry the name of a brand or topic instead of your personal name, use the custom name option.
When you create a channel under a brand name, Google creates a Brand Account. Its big advantage is that later you can give other team members (an editor, a manager) access to the channel without handing over your password. You do this in YouTube Studio under Settings → Permissions, where you can choose a separate role for each person. Never give anyone your Google password, and always keep 2-Step Verification turned on for your account.
Step 2: Name and handle
Choose a channel name that:
- is easy to read and remember,
- hints at your topic (for example AI, tech, cooking),
- is not a copy of another well-known channel or brand.
Your handle is your unique identity, such as @YourChannelName, and it also becomes your channel's short link (youtube.com/@YourChannelName). Try to keep the handle and the channel name similar, and it is even better if the same handle is available on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook too. You can change the name and handle in YouTube Studio under Customization → Profile, but YouTube does not allow repeated changes within a limited period, so decide carefully.
Step 3: Logo (profile picture) and banner
Profile picture
YouTube recommends an 800 x 800 pixel image for the profile picture, which is shown inside a small circle. So:
- keep the logo simple, with one or two colours and a clear shape.
- avoid fine text, because it cannot be read at a small size.
- keep the important part in the centre of the image so nothing is lost when it is cropped into a circle.
Banner (channel art)
Use an image of at least 2048 x 1152 pixels for the banner (the file should usually be under 6MB). The problem is that this image is cropped to different extents on TV, computer and mobile. The "safe area" that shows on every device is roughly 1235 x 338 pixels in the middle. Put your name, tagline and upload schedule (for example "New video every Friday") inside this area. Free tools such as Canva have a YouTube banner template with the safe area already marked.
Both images are uploaded from Customization → Profile. That is also where you can add a video watermark, a small image that works as a subscribe button in the corner of your videos. Only use images you made yourself or are legitimately allowed to use. You can also get AI's help to make a logo; the method is in our guide to creating images with AI.
Step 4: About section (description) and links
Write your channel description in the Profile part of Customization. A good description includes:
- A first sentence that clearly says who the channel is for and what it teaches.
- What kind of videos you post (tutorials, reviews, Shorts and so on).
- When new videos come out.
- How to get in touch.
Include your main keywords naturally in the description, but do not write a long list of keywords. In the same place, add your website and social media links in the Links section, and give a business email under Contact info so that brands and viewers can contact you. Never publish your personal phone number or home address.
Step 5: Channel keywords
In YouTube Studio, under Settings → Channel → Basic info, there is a "Keywords" box. Enter words here that describe the overall topic of your channel, for example: AI tools Urdu, YouTube tutorials, tech in Urdu. On the same page, select your country (country of residence) correctly as well. Channel keywords have a limited effect, and your real identity comes from your videos, but this takes only a few minutes, so do not leave it empty. To understand keywords better, read our YouTube SEO guide.
Step 6: Default upload settings
To avoid typing the same information on every video, open Settings → Upload defaults. Here you can set:
- a fixed part of every new video's description, such as social links and an introduction to the channel,
- the default visibility (it is best to keep it Private and make it Public after checking),
- the category (for example Education or Science & Technology),
- the video language and caption settings,
- comment settings.
These settings apply only to new videos, and you can still change them on each video later.
Step 7: Verification and access to features
Some features are locked on a new channel. After verifying with your phone number (youtube.com/verify), intermediate features such as custom thumbnails, videos longer than 15 minutes and live streaming usually unlock. After that, YouTube may ask for extra verification for advanced features, such as video verification, an ID document, or a good channel history. Check your status under Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility.
The verification badge (✓) shown next to a channel's name is a different thing; it is usually given to large, authentic channels, and its requirements are listed in the YouTube Help Center.
Step 8: Playlists and channel trailer
Playlists
From the very start, organise your videos into playlists by topic, for example "AI Tools", "YouTube Course", "Mobile Tips". Give each playlist a clear name and a short description. Playlists make your channel look organised, and viewers keep watching the next video after the first.
Channel trailer and home page
In Customization, the home page layout section lets you set two things: a channel trailer for viewers who have not subscribed yet, and a featured video for returning subscribers. Keep the trailer short (usually around one minute), and in the first few seconds say what the channel teaches and why people should subscribe. In the same place, add featured sections to show your most important playlists on the home page.
A short checklist
- Brand account, a strong password and 2-Step Verification
- A clear name and a matching handle
- A simple 800 x 800 logo and a banner that respects the safe area
- A clear About section, links and a business email
- Channel keywords and the correct country setting
- Upload defaults
- Phone verification
- At least two or three playlists and a channel trailer
Once the channel is ready, the next step is planning your content. For that, see our article on video ideas with the help of AI.
Summary
An organised channel tells a viewer at first glance what they will find there. Create your channel with a Brand Account, pick a name and handle people will remember, add a logo and banner of the right size, write a clear About section, links and keywords, set your upload defaults, verify with your phone, and complete your home page with playlists and a channel trailer. All of this is one day's work, but every video you publish afterwards benefits from it.
